You may associate the name of Desert Tactical Arms (DTA) with some of the finest precision sniper platforms available to military and law enforcement customers. However, this small but ambitious company, led by Nick Young, President of DTA, is producing some rather amazing weapon systems, and the premier offering is the DTA SRS Sniper Rifle Chassis in 338 Lapua Magnum.
What sets the DTA SRS apart from its competition is the support for a variety of calibers through a simple conversion requiring no more than 60 seconds to perform. The process is designed to be a field event under field conditions. The operator simply swaps barrel, magazine and bolt – Done!
Due to its bullpup design, the DTA SRS is no longer than the M16. The chassis is adjustable to suit operator body type and operational requirements. The trigger is fully adjustable, and the chassis offers full length rails at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The stock houses a quick deployment monopod for rear support. Mounting day or night optics is accomplished via 1913 rail system.
I had the opportunity to test fire the DTA SRS at the 2011 International Sniper Competition, held annually, at Ft. Benning, GA. Nick was preset at the vendor exhibit and I took advantage of that to try my hand at a 1,583 yard target. The trigger pull was smooth, breaking crisply like a glass rod and the weapon chassis was extremely comfortable to shoot. In this informal setting, I was able to hold 1 minute accuracy out to the target without much difficulty at all.
You’d think this was enough; however, if you ask Nick Young, making a high performance sniper rifle is simply step one in a systems approach to design. So, Desert Tactical Arms manufactures its own suppressors, muzzle brakes, and ammunition.
The end product is a sniper platform that is precisely tuned and quite capable of holding .25 minute of angle accuracy under most conditions. Desert Tactical Arms currently manufactures the DTA SRS, which supports 243 Win / .308 Win / .300 Win / .338LM / *New .260 Rem / 7mm / 6.5 x 47 mm.
