ReconRobotics To Supply Throwbot XTs To U.S. Army.

ReconRobotics makers of the Throwbot XT, an amazing throwable miniature robot, was awarded a $13.9 million contract by the U.S. Army’s Rapid Equipping Force for up to 1,000 miniature, throwable, mobile robots.

The Throwbot XT has been in use for sometime by 500 police and security agencies, including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Marshals for tactical reconnaissance in high-risk operations. The U.S. Army plans to similarly employ Throwbots in four and five man fire teams to provide the teams with real-time tactical information while conducting urban operations.

The Throwbot XT can be thrown up to 120 feet and weighs just a hair over a pound, so the entire system is easily transportable in a pack. It has built in IR capabilities and can be easily manuverable is very close quarters and crawl spaces.

I had an opportunity to experience its capabilities first had at SOFIC 2012 in Tampa.
