General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products (GDATP) unveiled a new Lightweight Medium Machine Gun (LMMG) at NDIA’s Joint Armaments Conference, Exhibition & Firing Demonstration held in Seattle this past May. The new machine gun attempts to fill a gap that exists between the 7.62mm M60 and .50 BMG M2 systems. GDATP’s LMMG meets that goal using the 338 Norma Magnun round. We found that to be an interesting choice given the commitment already made by the Services to the 300 Winchester Magnum and the 338 Lapua Magnum internationally. The LMMG has a collapsible buttstock and weighs 24 lbs. (11 kg). Chambered in the 338 Norma Magnum the LMMG has a maximum effective range out to 1700 meters.
David Steimke, primary project engineer says:
‘…We baselined our design around the .338
Norma, but [it] is also compatible with the Lapua
or the [Mk] 248 [.300 Win Mag],’ Steimke added.
‘We want to maintain that flexibility because,
after all, the soldier is going to be the one to
eventually say what he wants…’
