SOFIC 2013–QinetiQ MAARS


SOF operators have at their disposal an array of unmanned robotic tools that is unprecedented in the history of warfare, for example QinetiQ’s MAARS system.

The Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System (MAARS®) is an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed expressly for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) ; increasing the security of personnel in forward locations. MAARS can be positioned in remote areas where personnel are currently unable to monitor their security, and can also carry either a direct or indirect fire weapon system. Operators can direct and control the MAARS UGV over a distance of 1000 meters. MAARS modular architecture means the system can be configured for a variety of mission, including direct fire support.

As show above, the MAARS vehicle is configured with a 40 mm grenade launcher and 7.62 light machine gun, including a variety of sensors.
