Two of my Media Day favorites had to be the Savage Arms 110BA (300 Win Mag & 338 Lapua; the 10BA chambered in.308), part of the company’s Law Enforcement series, and KRISS’s Sphinx SDP Subcompact 9mm.
Savage shooters already know that Savage rifles are the most accurate off-the-shelf rifles you can own. The 110BA and 10BA are no exception but they are further enhanced by Savage’s Accu-Stock, 5 and 10 round Detachable Box Magazine, respectively, and a 1:10 right-hand twist barrel. At an M.S.R.P. of $2375 for the 10BA and $2561 for the 110BA they deserve a hard look, if you want to get into precision rifle shooting below the $5,000 price point. I would have liked a slightly smoother action but that will clear itself with a few hundred rounds down range. The Savage 110BA and 10BA are exceptional values, hands down.
As Mike from KRISS was giving me an overview of the Sphinx SDP 9mm Subcompact, I really expected just another snappy small frame 9mm. It was when I loaded a full magazine and began to fire in single and double action that I noticed the exceptionally consistent and smooth trigger with a crisp reset. This little guy shoots like a dream and is loaded with some exceptional features like the ambidextrous decocking lever, DA/SA and 13+1 capacity. M.S.R.P. for the SDP Subcompact has not been “formally” announced but you can expect to pay in the $900 to $1200 range. It’s certainly not a bargain basement purchase, so there’s no shortage of other choices in the market. But, the same can be said for Rolex! You decide, but I want one…
