Textron Systems is heavily involved with the U.S. Army’s Light Weight Small Arms Technologies or LSAT initiative. The company has developed a replacement for the M249 SAW. The new Light Machine Gun (LMG) uses linked ammunition and capable of a 650 round per minute cyclic rate. It uses a rotating chamber which improves both feeding and ejection. The LMG also uses a long-stroke soft recoil system that improves controllability.
The LMG fires a 5.56 round and will soon be available in 7.62. The weapon is designed for use with cased telescoped ammunition offering a 40% weight reduction and 12% volume reduction. It also features a quick detach field replaceable barrel.
