American Red Cross on NOAA/FEMA Announcement of Severe Atlantic Hurricane Season

Climate Change Is Making Hurricanes Stronger, Researchers Find - The New York Times

The American Red Cross released the following statement after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that the upcoming 2024 hurricane season will be one of the most challenging Atlantic hurricane seasons on record.

This hurricane season, more Americans than ever could be at risk to damaging storms, catastrophic rainfall and flooding, and intense storm surges. With more people living in hurricane-prone areas, the threat of powerful storms forming further north, and more rapidly intensifying storms, anyone living in coastal areas needs to be prepared even if they haven’t been impacted before. The evolving patterns of natural disasters have significantly altered the landscape, which is why the Red Cross launched a major new initiative to build more resilient communities before the next storm hits. Together with our partners and volunteers, we will continue to provide vital assistance and support to those affected by disasters, ensuring that no one faces these challenges alone.

The Red Cross is currently on the ground in Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and other states helping families recover after devastating storms. Red Cross volunteers are working alongside community partners to provide relief and comfort to survivors in their own neighborhoods and at our shelters, cooling centers, and distribution sites.
